Miso Chanko Nabe with Chicken Meatballs (Sumo Wrestler Hot Pot) ちゃんこ鍋

First let me apologize for not posting since I travelled back to our Tokyo home in June. I know the people who follow me on Instagram and twitter knew what I was up to (and what I was eating) and always follow my trips back to Japan. It was a very busy Summer for me plus we had record breaking sunshine and heat in Seattle so we spent most of our time outdoors enjoying it. Hubby was also in Seattle for the entire month of August so time just flew by. Oh and another big thing happened. A new Coton de Tulear puppy named Kenshin joined our family in August and I've been busy with puppy … [Read more...]

Corn Rice とうもろこし ご飯

I just returned from three fabulous weeks at our Tokyo home in Azabujuban and it was so hard returning to the United States even though I love our Seattle home just as much. Whenever anyone asks me which city I like better I really can't choose one. I love both places so much I guess that's why we have to live in two cities. I am happy to be out of the Tokyo humidity though. Seattle wins the best Summer weather in the world category hands down. Nothing beats Summer in Seattle. I was able to enjoy so many Summertime treats in Tokyo since I rarely go back this time of year (it's that humidity … [Read more...]

Hiyashi Chuka (Cold Ramen) with a Sesame Miso Sauce 冷やし中華ごまみそだれ

Hiyashi Chuka is a cold Ramen dish served during the hot and humid Summer months in Japan.  When the weather starts getting warm you will see Hiyashi Chuka posters popping up on the walls of every local Ramen shop.  This is a seasonal dish that you will only see during the Summer.  Hiyashi Chuka means "cold Chinese" in Japanese and I like to describe it as a cold ramen salad.  The noodles are the same noodles used in hot ramen but Hiyashi Chuka is topped with chilled fresh vegetables, shredded chicken, ham, roasted pork (Chashu) or seafood and a drizzle of sauce just to coat the ingredients … [Read more...]

Japanese Grilled Corn on the Cob 焼きとうもろこし

Summer is almost here and I'll be taking off and heading to our Tokyo home in a couple of weeks!  I am super excited about this trip since I didn't go back in the Spring during cherry blossom season like I usually do every year.  I rarely go back in the Summer.  Since we moved to Seattle, who has the best Summer in the world by the way, I can't handle Tokyo's heat and humidity.  Yes I'm a wimp.  I told hubby I'll just hang out in the Department Store Depachika (gourmet food floor), eat shaved ice and nosh on all of the other cool Summer treats Tokyo has to offer.  In an air conditioned room of … [Read more...]

Omurice オムライス

Omurice is a scrumptious half omelette and half rice dish that gets it's funny mixed up name from the two words omelet and rice.  Omurice starts with a chicken and tomato fried rice, or Chicken Rice as it's called in Japan, wrapped in a thin sheet of a fried egg.  Whenever I prepare Omurice and post photos on social media people are always surprised that this is a Japanese dish.  Omurice is a western influenced Japanese dish, or Yoshoku, created in Japan over a hundred years ago but is still one of the most popular dishes in Japan today.  You can often find it on the kids' menu in many … [Read more...]

Wafu Oroshi Hamburger Steak 和風おろしハンバーグ

I have another Japanese Hamburger Steak recipe to share with you and it is super yummy. The best way I like to describe Hamburger Steak is that it is like a mini meatloaf. You can find Hamburger Steak all over Japan and it is probably one of the most popular Yoshoku dishes on a Family Restaurant menu. Family Restaurants are Japan’s answer to the American chain-restaurant but with much better food. They are fairly large restaurants often with substantial parking lots and most are open twenty-four hours. Family restaurants generally serve a mix of Western, Yoshoku and Japanese cuisine. There … [Read more...]

Bukkake Udon ぶっかけうどん Japanese Cold Udon Noodles with Various Toppings

We are in the middle of the nicest Summer in Seattle in over fifty years.  Summer is always very beautiful in Seattle but this year we are having the best Summer I've ever experienced. There is an abundance of sunshine (over two months straight) the temperatures are warm but not too hot and the best thing is we don't get the humidity like most places.  The humidity part is why I spend the Summer at our Seattle home.  After growing up in Tokyo and still living there part of the year I stay away from the heat and humidity they get during Summer.  Living in Seattle has turned me into a heat wimp … [Read more...]

Gyudon Japanese Beef Bowl

I'm heading back to Tokyo soon and I'm really in a Donburi mood.  My last post was Katsudon and now I'm going to tell you about another favorite Donburi (Rice Bowl) Gyudon, or Japanese Beef Bowl.  Gyudon chains are scattered throughout Japan but I have never been a fan of chain restaurants and have only eaten at the very popular Gyudon chain Yoshinoya once.  That was enough for me.  Gyudon chains are considered cheap eats in Japan and the meat they use is very low quality. When I first met hubby he was a struggling Engineering student.  He worked and went to school full time and barely had … [Read more...]

Katsudon (Japanese Pork Cutlet over Rice)

Let me tell you how much I love Katsudon.  I really really love it.  I love it so much that it's always one of the first things I eat as soon as I land in Tokyo.  Katsu is short for Tonkatsu, or deep fried pork cutlet and Don is short for Donburi, or bowl.  I rarely make Katsudon at home.  Growing up in Japan I had the best Katsudon all around me and I could eat it whenever I wanted.  It was always something we went out to eat when I was a child.  Mom never made it at home because it was so much easier to go out and eat it at the local Katsu restaurant around the corner or call and have it … [Read more...]

Curry Udon

Japanese Curry has been a part of my life for as far back as I can remember.  My Mom made the best curry and I whenever I would smell her delectable curry coming from the kitchen it would make me very happy.  When I tell people how popular curry is in Japan they're usually quite surprised.  Curry is such a big part of the Japanese diet now and is popping up in new dishes every day.  The more common ones are curry filled bread (curry pan), curry rice, curry ramen and curry soba or udon just to name a few.  I love Curry Rice but a close second for me is Curry Udon. My favorite place to enjoy … [Read more...]

Korokke ~ Japanese Beef and Potato Croquettes

I have to tell you I'm very excited.  First Hubby was back in Seattle again last week for a few days on his way to California and second I'm off to Tokyo soon!  I cannot wait.  I've been making a list of the restaurants and cafes I'm planning to visit.  The list is full of old favorites and a few new places that I can't wait to try on this next trip.  The list is getting very long and I'm only there for fifteen days.  But there are three meals in a day right?  I'm thinking I'll be able to get to most of them. I know most of you might not know much about Japan or Tokyo but I'm sure you do … [Read more...]
