Tofu Dengaku, Tofu with a Sweet Miso Sauce

Tofu Dengaku - Tofu with a Sweet Miso SauceHere’s a simple tofu recipe that I wanted to post for those people who do not eat meat or who just love tofu, like me! I’m planning to post more meatless dishes in the future, I know I’m really lacking in that area. My Mother usually prepared meals with meat or seafood as the main ingredient so I really didn’t have a lot of exposure to many meatless meals as a child. I do however prepare many meatless meals at home, at least three days out of the week on average. There are so many delicious options out there now and I love experimenting.

I prepared Tofu Dengaku for our monthly Twitter Food Party in May. For those of you who don’t know what the Twitter Food Party is, it’s a monthly food party a group of us started on Twitter. We pick a different ingredient each month and on the last Monday of the month we all create a dish using that ingredient. It’s open to anyone on Twitter, you don’t have to be a blogger. We all tweet photos of our dishes throughout the day. It’s so much fun and the group keeps growing bigger each month.

I have to say I really love Miso Dengaku and have a Nasu Dengaku recipe on my blog. I recently noticed this Tofu version in one of my Japanese cooking magazines, Kyo no Ryori. It was a special edition filled with Japanese traditional recipes and I was very excited to try the recipe. I remember eating this dish in Tokyo but had never made it myself and once I realized how simple it was to prepare I loved it even more. It makes a great meatless main dish, served with rice and side salad or as an appetizer.

Ingredients: (Serves 2)

1 block of Grilled Tofu (use extra firm tofu if you can’t find grilled)

Miso Dengaku Sauce:

2/3 cup White Miso
1 Tablespoon Mirin
1 1/2 Tablespoons Sugar
2 1/2 Tablespoons Dashi (or chicken or vegetable stock)
1 Egg Yolk

Garnish:

Toasted Black Sesame Seeds

Cut the tofu into three pieces. Carefully place the tofu pieces into a small saucepan filled with simmering water (do not boil).

Make the Miso Dengaku Sauce:

Combine the first four sauce ingredients in a small saucepan and turn heat on medium-low. Whisk the sauce until it thickens slightly and turns shiny, about 5-7 minutes. Turn off heat, add the egg yolk and quickly whisk to incorporate the egg into the Miso Dengaku sauce. Set aside and let sauce cool slightly.

Carefully remove tofu from the simmering water and place on paper towels to remove excess water. Place all three pieces of Tofu on a plate and drizzle with the Miso Dengaku Sauce. Garnish with toasted black sesame seeds and serve.
